GRE Contrast and Logic Words That Reveal the Answer
GRE logic words expose the relationship around a blank. Translate the connector into a simple instruction such as reverse, continue, explain, or concede.
ETS specifically points test takers toward structural phrases such as although and moreover. These small words often do more work than the rare vocabulary nearby.
Reverse direction
although, but, yet, however, nevertheless, despite
Expect a meaningful change in direction. The second idea may qualify rather than completely contradict the first.
Continue or add
moreover, furthermore, likewise, indeed, in addition
Expect the blank to support or intensify the existing direction.
Explain cause or result

A concession acknowledges one point before preserving a larger argument.
A two-pass method
On the first pass, replace every connector with a plain instruction: reverse, continue, cause, example, or concede. On the second, predict the blank's direction and degree. Only then examine the vocabulary choices.
Four original micro drills
Although the initial result was encouraging, the larger trial was _____. The blank should weaken the positive direction.
The archive is incomplete; nevertheless, it has _____ several disputed dates. The blank should describe a useful achievement despite the limitation.
The model ignores seasonal demand; consequently, its estimates may be _____. The blank should name a negative result.
The two methods use different instruments. Likewise, they rely on _____ assumptions. The blank should continue a similarity.
Watch the scope
A contrast signal does not require an absolute opposite. A passage can move from strong praise to cautious praise, or from a general claim to one exception. Predict the size of the turn as well as its direction.
